8th November 1884

Youings Opens

Youings first opened its doors on November 8th, 1884. The owner Frank Youings, who had previously worked with his brother as a mason, had no experience in the retail trade and little knowledge of tobacco except that a lot of people were smoking pipes and cigars. Cigarettes were not yet in vogue and the first machine that made cigarettes didn’t appear on the market until 1890. Tobacconists were common sights in those days and there was much competition. Sundry lines such as walking sticks helped fill the shop and just in case, he included confectionary within the shop.

Day One Takings

The first day’s takings on November 8th, 1884, were 10 shillings and 6 pence for Tobacco and 2 shillings and 8 pence for sweets. The first week’s takings totaling 8 pounds and 8 shillings. The business eventually flourished, and a second shop was opened on at No8 High St. On Monday 15th September 1902. The shop was later managed by Gladys Seyfert, whose daughter would marry Basil Youings, Franks grandson in 1949.
September 1920

Frank sells to his son

In September 1920, aged 61 Franks passed the shop onto his son Harold, selling him the entire stock at a cost price of 353 pounds, 2 shillings and 3 pence, now the price of 3 cases of cigarettes.
1933

Harold Expands

Harold was extremely enterprising and was not content with the constraints of the small shops, and in 1933 acquired a large corner property just 30rds away. A prestigious site addressed No1 high street, using unique building materials such as self-cleaning tiled brick the building was completed and opened in 1934. Internally fitted with Mahogony cabinets, revolving window display unit and other mod cons, it created a traditional atmosphere but with up-to-date facilities. The building became the landmark of the town.
1951

Harold’s son joins

By this time cigarettes were the main form of smoking, and a large storeroom was incorporated for the blooming wholesale business supplying pubs and corner shops. In 1951 Harolds son Basil joined the company from the RAF. This was a time of shortages including Tobacco. Many a confrontation developed with customers, both retail and wholesale, over their allocation which had to be worked out by Basil and Harold. Everyone thought they deserved more, but there was never enough to satisfy demand. Queues formed outside the shop waiting for opening time and only one or two let in at a time.

The property at 1 high street incorporated 4 shops. The largest was utilized as the Tobacconist, another was a ladies and gents hairdressers, the remaining 2 were leased as a café and a dry cleaners.
